Repair or Replace?

Modern openers do things older units can't, but is replacement worth the investment?

New garage door openers come with bells and whistles: battery backup so you're not stranded in an outage, smart-home integration, and current safety features. However, an opener under ten years old with one failed part — a gear, a circuit board, a sensor — is usually worth repairing. Past fifteen years, parts get harder to source and the safety features built into current models, like auto-reverse sensitivity, rolling remote codes, and battery backup, aren't there at all. ROLL gives a straight answer on which side of that line your unit falls, not an upsell.

Choosing the Right Opener
Belt-drive openers run quiet — worth it if there's a bedroom or living space above or next to the garage. Chain-drive units cost less and hold up well, at the cost of more noise. Smart openers add smartphone control, activity alerts, and integration with home security systems and voice assistants, and it's worth comparing before you decide. ROLL walks through options based on your lifestyle and budget before you commit to a unit.
The Opener Installation Process

What Installation Includes

Removal of the old unit if applicable, mounting the new motor, rail installation, drive setup, safety sensor alignment, and force adjustment — the same standard covering every opener ROLL installs, not just the higher-end ones. Every installation is safety tested, synced to remotes or your phone, and connected to your home's Wi-Fi. Most jobs are done same day when scheduled before 4 PM.

Why Force Adjustment Isn't Optional

An opener that closes with too much force is an entrapment hazard for kids, pets, and anything left in the doorway. Every ROLL installation includes force adjustment testing, not a default factory setting left unchecked — the difference between a professional install and DIY.

Signs It's Time for a New Opener

    ● The opener is 15+ years old
    ● It responds inconsistently to the remote or app
    ● It grinds, strains, or runs without moving the door
    ● Safety sensors won't hold alignment
    ● You want smart features your current unit can't support
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a garage door opener myself?

Yes, but safety sensor alignment and force adjustment are where most DIY installs go wrong, and a misadjusted opener is a real entrapment risk. Professional installation also keeps most manufacturer warranties intact.

Why does my opener make a grinding noise?

Usually a worn gear, a drive component slipping, or a motor working harder than it should because of drive-system wear. It's diagnosable in one visit.

Is a smart opener worth it over a standard one?

If you want phone alerts when the door's left open, remote access for deliveries, or integration with an existing smart home or security system, yes. If you just want the door to open reliably, a standard belt or chain unit does that at a lower cost.

Will my existing remotes work with a new opener?

It depends on whether the existing remotes are compatible with the new unit's frequency. ROLL confirms compatibility before the job and reprograms or replaces remotes as needed.

How long does opener installation take?

Most installations, including a full swap of an old unit, are finished in two to three hours. However, an opener installation where there is no existing opener can take up to five hours.
